Joseph Conrad in Rouen: from the wave to the soul
It is through literature that we invite souls curious about the identity of seafarers at the time of the largest sailing ships gathered during ARMADA 2023 to embark.
Joseph Conrad (1857-1927), long-term captain in the British merchant navy, sailed the seas of the world for 20 years before becoming one of the greatest writers of the 20th century by delivering striking portraits of sailors.
Conrad stopped in Rouen on December 4, 1893 aboard the steamer Adowa. The port of Rouen, where he stayed for a month, was the port of his last stopover. He began his career as a writer with the novel "La folie Almayer" on the quays of our city.
This exhibition sheds a maritime light on the work of the author of Polish origin born on Ukrainian soil.
Through panels accompanied by photos, we will follow the writer reveal to us his perception of the sea, ships, and sailors.
Then with a maritime story emblematic of his work, we will immerse ourselves in the eye of the TYPHOON and the life of Commander Mac Whirr.
A video recording, produced for the exhibition, by Marc Porée (translator of J. CONRAD, lecturer, professor at the Ecole Normale Supérieure) will allow us to better understand the maritime and literary dimension of the author.
Finally, a series of exhibits and stories that inspired the author will continue to immerse us in the maritime world of the end of the 19th century when the large merchant ships disappeared one by one to make way for the first steamers.
By visiting the Conrad exhibition in Rouen: from the wave to the soul, you will also have access to the entire museum telling the maritime, river and port history of Rouen.
