Belem is the name of a Brazilian port. It is the last three-masted French barque in seaworthiness, classified as historic monument in 1984.
Built in Nantes, it was normally used in the Antilles. Then it became English, afterwards Italian and finally returned to France. This old cargo ship was transformed, motorized and renamed for different uses several times. Belem Foundation inherited it in 1980.
Once destined for the transport of goods, today, it is a training ship. It is used to train young people, in particular to train National Navy apprentice sailors. It can board up to 48 apprentices. It offers initiation and discovery courses to those who are passionate about it.
Its motto “Favet Neptunus eunti” means: Neptune favours those who travel.
