The vessel was built at the Spanish shipyard Construcciones Navales Paulino Freire (Freire Shipyard) in Vigo. Construction of the vessel began on November 16, 2015 with the first cut of a piece of steel and the keel of the vessel was laid on January 27, 2016.
The launch took place on October 17, 2016 in the presence of Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu, and Navy Commander Ade Supandi. The ship entered service on September 12, 2017.
On its maiden voyage, KRI Bima Suci departed Spain on Sept. 18, 2017. On board were 119 naval academy cadets and 64 officers. On November 24, 2017, the ship arrived in Surabaya.
The advantages of the Bima Suci over its predecessor Dewaruci are more advanced navigation facilities, seawater desalination, modern communication facilities and digital data transmission.
