La Recouvrance
You are here : Home / Ship / La RecouvranceIts name comes from the Brest district of the same name. In the parish of Saint-Catherine (the former name of Recouvrance), a statue of a virgin, Notre-Dame de Recouvrance (Lady of Recovery), was honoured and the neighbourhood was named after it. To recover the earth is to find the earth: we prayed to Our Lady of Recovery to make a good return to her homeland.
Recouvrance is a topsail schooner and a replica of the "Iris" type of schooners, a model designed by the naval architech Hubert in 1817. These military ships were intended for the transport of urgent letters and the surveillance of merchant shipping and repression of the slave trade in the African coasts and the Antilles. They carried six 24-pounder carronades and their crew consisted of 50 to 60 men.
