VERA CRUZ

The caravel belongs to the Portuguese Sailing Training Association (Associação Portuguesa de Treino de Vela - Apovela 1) and is intended to allow training at sea, especially for young people, to participate in nautical events and events with other tall ships, and to investigate the behavior and maneuvering of old caravels.

The Vera Cruz caravel can be visited by schools in the Doca de Alcântara in Lisbon. Over the years, this ship has visited many national and foreign ports, including trips to Bruges, Saint-Malo and participation in the commemorations of 540 years of the settlement of the Azores.

Every year, thousands of children and young people board the caravel for a study trip on Portuguese ships of the 15th and 16th centuries (with particular emphasis on caravels), nautical instruments and life on board on great voyages of discovery. These visits take place in Lisbon and other national ports - in 2009 the caravel received schools in Ílhavo and Peniche.
